In early spring, the seed catalogs start hitting mailboxes, and it's hard not to get excited about the thought of another summer garden. Ordering from seed catalogs is fun and exciting, but it can get a bit overwhelming, too!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Seed catalogs
  • Notebook
  • Pen
  • Your growing season
  • Your plant hardiness zone
  1. Step 1

First, you need to know the growing season for your area and your plant hardiness zone. These two items tell you what plants will grow successfully in your area and when to plant them for the best growing results.

  2. Step 2

Gather all your seed catalogs together and go through each one by one.

  3. Step 3

Get a notebook and make a list of all the seeds you're interested in. Make a page for each type of plant, or keep columns of lists of each plant. Make a note which seed catalog they are in, too!

  4. Step 4

Narrow down your lists until you've decided on one or two types of plants in each category.

  5. Step 5

Put the seed catalogs and your lists away for a few days, just to let your ideas settle!

  6. Step 6

Go back to your lists, and decide what you really want to plant in your garden. Don't forget to decide how much space you have, and how much space all these plants will take up when they are full grown.

  7. Step 7

Place your order, and wait for your seeds to arrive!

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't over buy! Everything tends to look good in the catalog, but do you have room for it all in your garden?
  • Don't forget to make sure all the plants you buy will grow successfully in your area.
  • Don't order everything from one catalog, use two or three to add depth and interest to your garden.
