When it comes to digital photo printers, the consumer has tons of models to choose from. The decision can be difficult to make when one can't tell the difference between brands or isn't familiar with common options. This article will help you decide what kind of photo printer is right for you. Read on to learn how to choose a photo printer.

Things You'll Need:

  • Digital camera
  • USB, cord in some cases
  • Media card
  • PC
  1. Step 1

Determine what kind of technology you prefer. There are two basic types of photo printers: ink jet and the dye sublimation variety. Dye sublimation printers are like laser printers. They use heat to produce color on glossy photo paper, and typically result in exceptional quality prints. Ink jet printers use ink cartridges to produce your image onto paper. They too can produce exceptional quality photos. Whichever technology you choose, select the highest available resolution in order to get the best quality prints.

  2. Step 2

Consider your camera. You'll need to find a printer that is compatible with your camera. Some printers have media slots where your camera's card can be inserted. Pictures are then printed directly from the card. Others connect to your camera via a USB cord. This is commonly called PictBridge. Make sure your camera has that capability before choosing a PictBridge printer. Still, other printers connect to your PC, allowing you to edit photos before printing.

  3. Step 3

Consider portability. How important is it for you to be able to take your printer with you on vacations or business trips? Make sure any model you're considering has a battery operated option if portability is necessary in your situation.

  4. Step 4

Consider the cost of printing. Dye sublimation printers usually require special paper and ink cartridge kits, which results in a higher per print cost. If you plan to print a lot of pictures, an ink jet printer is probably the best option. Cartridges for these printers are often less expensive.
