How to Breathe Properly to Reduce Stress

Although breathing is automatic, many people don't breathe properly. Using good breathing techniques can help you when you feel stressed out. Try the following steps the next time you are overstressed.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Sit up as straight as you can, or lie down on the floor. Make sure you are comfortable in whichever position you choose.

  2. Step 2

    Relax your shoulders.

  3. Step 3

    Inhale deeply. The way to find out if your inhaling enough is to check your stomach. Is it protruding out as you breathe in? If it is, then you are successfully filling your lungs with air.

  4. Step 4

    Exhale slowly. As you exhale, focus on your breathing.

  5. Step 5

    Repeat Steps 3 and 4 at least seven more times.

  6. Step 6

    Set a specific time at several points during the day to engage in the deep breathing exercises.

Tips & Warnings
  • As you inhale and exhale, keep your attention on your breathing. This will help keep your mind off of thing things that are stressing you out.
  • When you feel stressed or panic, immediately start your breathing exercises. After four or five breaths, you should start feeling more relaxed.
  • If you inhale and exhale too quickly, you won't receive the calming benefits of the exercise.
