How to Tell Your Kids That Santa Claus Doesn't Exist

Santa Claus is a tough subject to tackle when you don't have enough money to buy your child everything he or she wants for Christmas. If they truly believe in Santa Claus and they don't get everything they want under the Christmas tree, they'll believe that Santa must have thought that they were naughty or that Santa forgot about them. It's your job as a parent to let them know the true meaning of Christmas. Read on to tell your kids that Santa Claus doesn't exist.

Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

  • A child's story book or children's bible book explaining the birth of Jesus

Step1
Set aside time to talk with your child. Make sure there are no distractions. Preferably wait until bedtime.
Step2
Ask your child about their thoughts on Christmas and what Christmas really means.
Step3
Listen intently to what your child has to say and then let them know that Christmas is a time that we choose to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Let them know that Jesus is the son of God. Read out loud the children's story book on the Birth of Jesus Christ. Explain that during the time of celebrating the Birth of Jesus we give gifts to our family and friends.
Step4
Discuss some of your family traditions of opening presents on Jesus's Birthday on December 25.
Step5
Tell your child that Santa Claus is a make-believe person. Some people like to pretend that he is real and dress up in Santa suits to have fun.
Step6
If you are having financial difficulty and will not be able to get your child all the gifts he or she wants explain that this year mommy or daddy will give a special gift from the heart, instead of lots of presents. Let them know that there will only be one special gift from the heart given and it will be a surprise.
Step7
Save money to purchase the special gift and give it to your child on Christmas day.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be prepared to answer your child's questions on the birth of Jesus Christ and explain it so that they can understand it.
  • Don't bad mouth people who believe in Santa Claus or say things to make the child feel bad for believing in Santa Claus.
  • Don't say negative things about Santa Claus other than the fact that he is not a real person.
