If the children truly are our future, and they are not aware of the astronomical impact that we have on our environment, than the future could be a scary thing to behold. As parents and mentors, it’s our responsibility to educate and impassion them about the world and their responsibility for it. Although it’s important to teach kids about saving the planet as a whole, it’s easiest to show them how by the little things that can be done every day at home to help with the environment.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Start with water. Teach them to turn off the faucet as soon as they’re done, every time and using a pencil thin stream of water. Wash their fruits and veggies in a bowl and maybe take a trip to a local stream to do a cleanup
Step2
Move on to paper. It’s amazing how much paper one child can bring home from school in a given week. Pile these announcements, assignments and miscellaneous stuff up with your daily mail, magazines and newspapers and you’re looking at significant waste. Teach kids to recycle these pieces so they can be reused and the next batch of pages from the teacher won’t have to cost us a tree to make. Take your child outside and show them which recycle container holds what waste, so they know where to throw the trash when they’re done with it.
Step3
Turn off the lights! This one’s so easy, yet it seems to be the hardest thing to teach kids. Not only does it save Mom and Dad money, but the importance of conserving energy has to be a priority in the home, so remind, remind, remind whenever you find that your little guy has left a light on after leaving the room. Still forgetting? Try using the nickel jar. Place a glass jar on the kitchen counter labeled “energy saving money” and whoever leaves a light on has to put a nickel in the jar. Not only will it be a constant reminder for the kids, they can also try and check if anyone else leaves lights on. Being aware is the first real step.
Step4
Keep it fresh. Take your youngster to the local farmers market where you buy your fruit and let them pick out a special fruit to pack with lunch or a veggie to have with dinner. Show them how fruits and veggies can be composted after eating them, so they can see how to re-enrich the grounds with local products.
