The Diamond. Purchase a "used" diamond. A used diamond in perfect condition is exactly the same as new diamond only it costs a whole lot less.
Step2
Check your favorite jewelry shops for rings on consignment. An Estate Jeweler should have a good selection of diamonds. Unless you are looking for an estate ring, you are only interested in the diamonds in the rings and not the rings. However, you will have to purchase the entire ring with the diamond at these shops.
Be sure to know how much a new diamond in that category would cost you elsewhere before making a purchase.
Step3
After you purchase your used diamond ring, go to your favorite jeweler and pick out a setting that will accomodate the diamond you have purchased. You can sell the shank (the ring) to the jeweler for a reduction in price on your new setting.
Tips & Warnings
Recycling diamonds is an excellent way NOT to support the diamond mining industry and its practices.
Newer diamonds have serial numbers lasered onto them. Be sure to keep a record of the number incase of diamond swapping.
Be sure you know your diamond is the real deal. There are plenty of fakes on the market that look just as good if not better than real diamonds.

Recycling is a wonderful way to avoid the not so wonderful side of this world. I liked the ideas that you gave. If you like hearts most of the settings or heart shaped diamond cuts go on sale right after Valentine's Day.
