How to Get Your First Bikini Wax

How to Get Your First Bikini Wax thumbnail
Bikini waxes can be uncomfortable, but the results are worth it.

Some women prefer waxing to shaving when removing hair from their bikini area. Waxing is a longer-lasting method of hair removal because waxing pulls the hair and root out of the skin. Though bikini waxes are a great way to remove hair, the idea of having hot wax applied to your skin and then peeled away can be frightening. See a licensed esthetician and take care of your bikini area both before and after your first waxing so you will have the best possible introduction to the procedure. Does this Spark an idea?

Find a licensed esthetician. An esthetician is a skin care professional certified to perform services such as facials and waxing. See a qualified, experienced professional to make your waxing experience as easy as possible.

Decide how much hair to remove. There are a range of services offered for a bikini wax. You can just remove the hair along the bikini line or you can go with a Brazilian wax that removes all hair from the groin, labia and buttocks.

Prepare for your waxing appointment. Estheticians recommend having four to five days of hair growth when visiting the salon. Also, gently exfoliate the areas to be waxed in the days leading up to your waxing appointment. Finally, if pain is a concern, take an over-the-counter pain medication one hour before your appointment.

Know what to expect. When your appointment time comes, you need to remove your clothing below the waist. Your esthetician trims any long pubic hairs that are too long to wax and disinfects the areas to be waxed. She then applies hot wax to the skin and removes it with a muslin strip or with peel-away wax, depending on the type of wax used. When she has finished waxing all areas, she removes any residue and applies a cream to soothe your skin.

Care for your waxed skin. During the 48 hours following your bikini wax, don't scrub the area. If you experience redness or irritation, apply a cortisone cream to the affected skin. Do not expose your waxed skin to direct sunlight during the first 24 hours following a wax.

Tips & Warnings

  • Schedule your bikini wax during the two weeks before or the two weeks following your period. Your bikini area is more sensitive right before and right after your period, making waxing at that time more painful.

  • Gently exfoliating the area can help prevent ingrown hairs by removing dead skin cells that can clog pores.

  • If ingrown hairs or red bumps show up as the hair begins to grow back, do not squeeze.
