Are you aspiring to be a vegetarian or vegan? Or maybe you are trying to decrease your cholesterol intake? Abstaining from meat is a difficult lifestyle choice, but it will help decrease cholesterol and your risk of food borne illnesses. In addition, whether you mean to or not, you are making a compassionate choice for the animals. Read on to learn how to abstain from meat.

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Decide how committed you are going to be to this new lifestyle. Are you going to abstain from all meat or just red meat?
Step2
Create a plan to meet your goal. Maybe you will slowly stop eating meat or quit cold turkey. Provide yourself with enough time to change, but do not be too lenient.
Step3
Talk to family members and friends about your new lifestyle choice. Explain to them your reason for changing and let them know that you would appreciate their support. Knowing that others are supporting you in your decision makes changing all that much rewarding and easier.
Step4
Put your plans in writing. Setup a contract for yourself and have a family member or friend sign as a witness. Maybe you will have someone willing to encourage you throughout your journey.
Step5
Start a daily journal. Write down what you ate and how you felt after you ate it. After a couple weeks, determine if you have decreased your meat intake.
Step6
Research vegetarian and vegan food recipes to get ideas for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not become discouraged if you cannot quit immediately, because some things take time.
  • If you cut meat out of your diet, also consider whether or not you want to cut out all animal byproducts such as milk, cheese and eggs.
