Most important step to changing any fuel filter is to relive the fuel pressure in the system. The fuel pressure can be relieved by 1, removing fuel pump fuse, 2, Disconnecting the fuel safety shut off switch, 3, using a fuel pressure testing kit. If using methods 1 or 2, start the engine and run until it dies. -
Step 2
Fuel filterGet your tools together and locate your fuel filter, (note on some vehicles, the fuel filter can not be serviced or changed, This is due to the fact that is a complete assembly attached to the fuel pump). After you have your tools and have found you fuel filter, Remove your fuel filler cap.
-
Step 3
Compare your old fuel filter to your new one, some have to be put in a certain direction to work correctly. Look at how your fuel filter is attached to the vehicle, It may be held in by a bracket attached with a bolt, It may just be held in by the bracket itself. Look at how the fuel filter is attached as well the fuel lines, some use hose clamps on rubber lines, some use a plastic hairpin clip the attach the fuel lines to the fuel filter. On new models, Most fuel filters are retained by the fuel line connection.
-
Step 4
If your fuel filter is attached by hose clamps, loosen hose clamps and remove the fuel lines, (some fuel leakage may occur, Remember, gasoline is highly flammable, take basic precautions, don't smoke, keep all heat sources away from the fuel). If you fuel filter is attached with plastic hairpins, use pliers and gentle force to remove them, Then remove the fuel lines. If you have steel fuel lines and don't see either hose clamps or Plastic clips, then use your fuel disconnect tool to remove both fuel lines.
-
Step 5
Once again compare the old filter to the new one, some of them are mark in and out, the out side always points towards the engine, If your fuel filter had hose clamps, replace the hose clamps and install the rubber fuel lines back on to the filter. Tighten hose clamps. If yours use plastic clips, Install the plastic fittings back onto the new filter and install you plastic clips, give each line a slight tug to make sure the line is connected correctly. If your fuel filter uses steel lines, then install you steel lines back onto the fuel filter.
-
Step 6
Replace your filter back inside it's mounting bracket and reattach the bracket, Check for any leaks. Re install your gas tank cap.
-
Step 7
Replace the fuse, or reattach the fuel safety switch, then start vehicle, it may take up to 15 seconds to start, ( DO NOT HOLD THE KEY IN THE START POSITION FOR MORE THEN 15 SECONDS ) if at first it doesn't start try again, if on the third try it doesn't start, check for leaks around the filter. If the vehicle does start, check for leaks
-
Step 8
If leaks are found then recheck you connections, If unsure, take to your mechanic to have repaired, If no leaks are found, Then congratulations, you've changed your fuel filter.
