1. Plan ahead. Once the decision has been made to leave the military, notice what contractors hire on your military installation. Make an effort to talk with employees of these contractors. Most will give you information on who does the hiring and what skills the job requires.
2. When leaving the military, participate in the transition program offered by your branch of service. Many employers seeking veterans use these offices to recruit for jobs.
3. Look online. Specific websites have been developed for veterans seeking employment. Using websites such as Transition Assistance Online will give you a good idea of which companies hire former service members and what type of jobs are available.
4. Network with fellow veterans. Former co-workers and supervisors are usually willing to share job openings they know about if you were a productive member of their unit.
5. Use the Veteran’s Service Representative at your local “One Stop,” a federal program which assists job seekers. One Stop can help with writing resumes and vocational testing in addition to identifying military-friendly employers.
