Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

    Babysit.

  1. Step 1

Experienced babysitters in New York City earn, on average, $14 to $16 an hour. If you have any experience at all with children, this is your chance to earn some seriously easy money. Usually the children are in bed late-night while Mommy and Daddy are out on the town. Your only responsibility is usually to make sure the child doesn’t wake up crying, and to decide which TV show you want to watch while you relax for several hours, while earning a nice buck.

  2. Step 2

To find a babysitting job: Post an ad on Craigslist under the “Childcare” section. State your availability, experience and your eagerness to assist your future clients. Evening and weekend babysitting is both accommodating to your nine to five work schedule, and fitting to the needs of most babysitter-seeking families.

  3. Step 3

Browse through posts in the "Seeking" section that families have made to find a babysitter, and always remember to talk to co-workers, friends or neighbors about other babysitting opportunities.

  4. Step 4

Wait to hear back. Sometimes you can get very lucky, hearing back from two or three families, while other times it is a challenge to hear back at all.

  5. Step 5

If you do not get any replies within several days, re-post your ad and keep trying.

  6. Serve at a Restaurant or Café

  7. Step 1

Earn extra cash from tips you earn at a serving job. Though it may be a bit difficult to find a restaurant willing to work with your limited availability, once you do, the payoff can be big.

  8. Step 2

Find a serving job that caters not only to your schedule, but to your experience as well. Smaller coffee shops and cafés are usually more lenient, while chains and upscale dining usually require prior serving experience.

  9. Step 3

Depending on the restaurant, expect to make around $10 to $15 in tips an hour.

  10. Work in Retail

  11. Step 1

Work the weekends at part-time job in retail. Most retail stores are always looking for part-time employees, especially during the holiday and summer seasons.

  12. Step 2

Call or stop into Gap, Best Buy, Old Navy, Macy’s and other retailers to see who is hiring. Ask to fill out an application while you are there, or make a trip in to fill one out.

  13. Step 3

Though the hourly pay is usually not spectacular, the extra work hours and generous employee discount will make it well worth your time.

  14. Become a Tutor

  15. Step 1

If you have a college degree and/or experience with children or teaching, an excellent way to earn some extra money is by tutoring. Put your knowledge of Spanish, biology, English, calculus and other subjects to work by helping children from grade school to college with their homework or to prepare for a test.

  16. Step 2

Work for a tutoring agency, which can offer up to $35 an hour to tutor a client they have found that match your areas of expertise. You usually spend one to two hours a week with a client.

  17. Step 3

Check Craigslist for tutoring companies looking for tutors, or for parents themselves seeking extra educational assistance for their child.

  18. Freelance

  19. Step 1

Ask yourself, "What am I good at?", and put those skills to work.

  20. Step 2

If you write, look for freelance writing opportunities, or why not pitch a great feature idea of your own to a magazine or newspaper. Start small and work your way up. Like to blog? Keep your eye out, there are sometimes paid blogging opportunities on varying topics. Are you an expert on web design, HTML or JavaScript? New and up-and-coming companies are popping up all the time, and may seek extra assistance in creating an online presence. Additionally, there may be marketing and/or promotional opportunities as well.

  21. Step 3

Be pro-active. If you see an open opportunity, propose your ideas and see how the company reacts.

  22. Step 4

Check Craigslist for freelance opportunities in various fields.

on 12/8/2007 Babysitter beware. The best first time meeting of the family is in a public spot. There was a woman killed that responded to a "babysitter needed ad" and it was less then a month ago. There are always to make an extra buck but make sure you are safe doing it. Your life is not worth anything they could pay you.
