Things You'll Need:
- French phrasebook
-
Step 1
Observe how the French dress and try to mirror it. They tend to be more conservative and formal. You will see very few French people in shorts. Try to avoid the tourist uniform of shorts, flip-flops and an Eiffel Tower t-shirt.
-
Step 2
French people consider politeness important. Shop owners will often greet you when you enter. Respond with "bonjour" and a smile.
-
Step 3
Ask them nicely if they speak English (Parlez-vous anglais?) before you begin speaking English. It is offensive to them when visitors make no effort to speak French. We would find this offensive as well in the United States.
-
Step 4
Say "Je voudrais" ("I would like") when making a request. Always use "please" ("s'il vous plaƮt") and "thank you" ("merci").
-
Step 5
Speak at a normal volume. If they don't understand you, don't raise your voice to try to compensate.
-
Step 6
Try to adhere to French customs. In a restaurant, don't ask for a to-go box. They just don't do that in France. Relax and enjoy the slower pace of life. Being rushed can come off as demanding or pushy.

on 7/8/2008 Excellent advice! A little bit of French and a polite smile goes a long way in their country because it is the effort that counts. Tres bien!
