How to Grow a Windowsill Herb Garden

Fresh herbs don't have to disappear with the end of farmers' markets and summer breezes! You can grow your own herbs year round right on your kitchen windowsill; so you'll have a fresh supply of herbs for cooking whenever you need them! Read on to learn more.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pots for planting
  • Potting soil
  • Fertilizer
  • Seeds for your favorite herbs OR
  • Seedlings for your favorite herbs
  1. Step 1

    Follow the directions on your seed packets for planting the seeds; or plant your seedlings in your pots, using potting soil.

  2. Step 2

    Place your pots in a sunny windowsill and water regularly. Don't over-water!

  3. Step 3

    As shoots appear, thin them out so that you have a few stems of herbs in each pot; but don't let them get too crowded.

  4. Step 4

    Continue to water regularly.

  5. Step 5

    Fertilize every four to six weeks with a liquid or dry indoor plant food fertilizer. Remember, it's better to add too little fertilizer than too much!

  6. Step 6

    Harvest your herbs as they mature and use them in your favorite dishes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't over-water your herbs. Too much water is just as bad for your plants as too little water.
