Do you find yourself with a dead end job? Maybe you’ve reached your capacity on the pay scale as well. An advanced degree could help you get the job you really want with the salary to match. Read on to learn more.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Internet Connection
Step1
Know your purpose. Decide if you want to advance in your current job or switch industries. Maybe you want those extra letters behind your name or you may simply just want to be qualified for a promotion. Both are great reasons to get an advanced degree
Step2
Talk to your boss. Getting that degree doesn’t always equal promotion. You may have to switch companies to realize the benefit of doing so. Find out what the career path is for your job or what opportunities may be available if you earned an advanced degree. Research professional designations that are designed for your industry. That might be enough to get you where you want to be financially as well. This alternative may save your time and money.
Step3
Explore funding options. Higher education isn’t free. Plan ahead and figure out how you will pay for it. Going to school part time will allow you to get your degree while still earning an income. There are scholarships out there for everyone. Use the internet as a tool to find the ones that you qualify for. If you have to take out loans, decide which ones will best cater to your needs. Soliciting from your friends and family doesn’t hurt either.
Step4
Choose the right program. There’s nothing more frustrating than realizing that you spent a lot of money and time getting a degree that isn’t useful to you once you graduate. A schools reputation may help you market yourself as most employers’ link values to different schools as well as their programs. Do your homework on which one is right for you.
Step5
Build a network. It’s not what you know but who you know. Talk to your professors as they will give you advice on where to find potential employers. Join the professional organization for your industry. They often offer happy hours, seminars and workshops that you can use as meet and greets. You never know if the person you met over drinks will be across the table from you in an interview.
