How to Deal with Attendance Problems in the Workplace

People are the most important factor in any successful organization. However, it is difficult for employees to succeed as a team if they are continuously absent. Absenteeism can lead to declines in productivity and, perhaps inevitably, to sales declines. If an absenteeism problem becomes apparent, it is important for management to act.

Instructions

    • 1

Review and monitor employee attendance by making an attendance report. The report should list each employee's name, department, title, and the dates that they were absent.

    • 2

Check the attendance report to see if there are any trends, such as a high level of call-ins due to weather problems, Monday morning call-ins or Fridays morning call-ins.

    • 3

Establish an attendance policy in which employees are required to provide doctor's excuses anytime sick days occur.

    • 4

If and when doctor's excuses are received, verify the excuse by calling the doctor and ensuring that the doctor's excuses are legitimate.

    • 5

If employees miss more than three consecutive days without providing a legitimate doctor's excuse, give a oral or written warning.

    • 6

Find out if attendance problems are the result of low employee morale issues by conducting a companywide employee relations survey. Hire a consultant or work with the human resource department to boost employee morale.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember to offer Family Medical Leave Act time (unpaid time off) to employees who have sick days consistently.

  • Do not terminate employees who miss days due to illness.
