WARNING WARNING WARNING This can’t be stressed enough. Never take a cross country road trip with a dog—no matter how small--and a child under 10 without some serious thought and planning. The child’s constant whine of “are we there yet” combined with the dog’s barking will truly challenge your sanity. It will become a test of how much you love the dog and your child, or even which you love more. The good news is that with just a few simple steps, you, your child and dog can have a fun and exciting trip.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Make a list of the items you will need for both the dog and child. While each will have individual needs, there are certain needs both have in common. They will both need food, toys and refreshments.
Step2
Buckle up both of them. There are harnesses and other items available at local pet stores to safely buckle up your dog. The same goes for your child. If she is less than 4 foot 9 inches, get a booster or car seat. Having them both safely buckled in will save you the hassle of pulling over suddenly because the dog has decided to help you drive.
Step3
Talk, sing and play games with your child while driving. Yes, the dog doesn’t understand, but a happy family tone will comfort him. For the child, it’s simply fun to interact with mommy and daddy. She will rarely ask, “are we there yet?” if she is happy and occupied.
Step4
Make frequent stops. The dog will need to relieve herself, and your child would enjoy stretching his legs.
Step5
Leash the dog when you take breaks. The last thing you want is to ruin a family vacation because the dog jumped out of the car without a leash and got hurt.
Step6
Bring a frisbee or a ball during the breaks. It’s perfect time for the whole family to play together and both the dog and child will get to burn off energy. In fact, if you are lucky, both may just end up sleeping for the rest of the trip.

Tips & Warnings

  • Disposable wipes and paper napkins are handy for a quick clean-up after a messy snack.
  • Always keep a first-aid kit in your car.
  • A pair of scissors and tweezers may come in handy.
  • A blanket for the dog to sit on.
  • Blankets and pillows for a sleepy child.
