Movies can be an excellent way to learn about a country, its culture and its language. Of course Fellini’s Dolce Vita is the most recognized achievement of Italian cinema. But, there are many modern wonders coming from the land of pasta and gelato. The following steps will help you find your way to amore with Italian cinema.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • a copy of the movies "Cinema Paradiso," "Caterina in the Big City," "Malena" and "Don't Move"
  • soundtrack of "Cinema Paradiso"

Step1
Visit your local movie store. It is best to go to a chain store such as Blockbuster or Hollywood Videos because you are more likely to find an entire section on foreign films.
Step2
Rent Cinema Paradiso--the story of a small town boy’s love affair with the movies. Beautiful cinematography and precise direction that makes the cuts barely noticeable.
Step3
Get a copy of Cinema Paradiso soundtrack. Italian cinema often benefits from the talents of the unforgettable Ennio Morricone. Upon first listen you will see why his music becomes an intrinsic part of the film.
Step4
Rent and watch Malena, written and directed by Giuseppe Tornatore. This colorful, complex story will give you a personal view into the lives of small town Italians during the reign of Mussolini, at the beginning of World War II.
Step5
Watch Caterina in the Big City to explore the remnants of post-Fascist schism that torn up Italy through the attitudes of its youth.
Step6
Watch a few movies by one of Italy’s most intriguing storytellers, director and actor Sergio Castellitto. Castellito’s Don’t Move has caught international cinema enthusiasts’ attention with its frank portrayal of economic disparity between the social classes, adultery, and love.
