How to Experience Synchronicity

Synchronicity is a big concept. You may know when you experience it, but find it hard to put the experience into words. It was described by psychologist Carl Jung, who coined the term, as "meaningful coincidence." Many people who experience synchronicity would like to have more of it in their lives, but this can be tough because of its fleeting nature. Still, there are some steps you can take to invite more synchronicity into your life. Read on to learn how.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Be aware of coincidence. Think about major themes in your life recently. Are there any topics you have been unusually drawn to, or events that have had an odd amount of emotional impact? Synchronicity is often linked to strong emotion or active interest? For example, if you have really been missing a certain friend recently and then suddenly see them unexpectedly, that could be an occurrence of synchronicity.
Step2
If you have a hard time noticing any coincidences, consider keeping a thematic journal. Record images from your dreams and daydreams, recurring thoughts, exciting possibilities and outlandish ideas that occur to you. Try not to censor yourself, because often the wildest thoughts are the ones that really lead people to experience synchronicity.
Step3
Allow for some randomness. If your routine is extremely regular there may not be much of an avenue for meaningful coincidence to reach you. Of course it is still possible, but you may increase your chances greatly by varying your routine or introducing other random or unusual elements. For example, what will you encounter if you walk home a different way, pick up a book you wouldn't normally read, or even try a tarot reading? It's hard to receive meaningful new input if you hardly get any new input at all.
Step4
Another technique for being open to universal messages is trying to perceive and follow your intuition. If you have a sudden and unexplained impulse to do something, no matter how baffling, consider doing it if it doesn't seem harmful. By following these small impulses, we can train ourselves to be more open to bigger suggestions. And often these suggestions lead to more experiences of synchronicity.
Step5
If you start to experience synchronicity, or even any coincidence, increase your odds by moving slightly in that direction. For example, if you have been thinking of going to the beach and then suddenly learn that a friend is planning a trip to the beach, see if you might be able to go along. This suggestion is similar to the last step; but when the impulse you are following is itself a synchronicitous one, this technique is even more important and effective.

Tips & Warnings

  • Talk to your friends about their experiences of synchronicity. Often trends in coincidence effect more than one person; someone you know may be encountering themes similar to yours.
