How to Be a Non-Skier in Zermatt

With the spectacular, snow-capped Matterhorn as the backdrop, it’s easy to see why Zermatt, Switzerland is a paradise for winter sports lovers, particularly skiers. Non-skiers, however, can find plenty of appealing diversions to warm up to in this heavenly hamlet. Read on to learn more.

  1. Step 1

    Visit the Matterhorn Museum to learn about the Matterhorn’s origins in Africa, the history of Zermatt and the first, precarious ascent of the mountain. An audio guide and video presentation about the Matterhorn are available. You can also take a guided historical walking tour of the village to learn more about the town’s rich history.

  2. Step 2

    Glide through Zermatt’s beautiful countryside on a dogsled tour with Husky-Zermatt. Instructors will show you to how steer the sled through the powdery snow, put on the dog harnesses and attach the dogs to the pull line. A picnic lunch is part of this unique experience.

  3. Step 3

    Take in stunning mountain scenery as you travel by cableway to Matterhorn glacial paradise, touted as the highest sightseeing point in Europe. You’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of the Swiss, Italian and French Alps. The tour takes approximately 40 minutes and there are stops along the way, including Trockener Steg, where you’ll find palate-pleasing fare.

  4. Step 4

    Enjoy shopping and dining in this tony town of wooden chalets and lively activities. Cozy shops sell everything from candy and souvenirs to high-end jewelry and perfume. Then tuck into some delectable cuisine found at one of the many dozens of restaurants that Zermatt has to offer. You’ll find everything from traditional Swiss cuisine to sushi.

  5. Step 5

    Embrace winter fun by participating in other sports such as ice skating, tobogganing and snow shoe hiking. For those non-skiers who want to enjoy alternative high-octane thrills, try ice climbing or paragliding.

  6. Step 6

    Wind your way through the mountains from Zermatt on the Gornergratbahn cog railroad to the 3,089-metre Gornergrat, a magnificent viewpoint from which to take in 29 majestic mountain peaks. The train makes several stops along the way, giving photographers ample opportunities to snap images of the Matterhorn.

  7. Step 7

    Stay a night or two at Igloo Village. A variety of overnight accommodations are available including standard igloo rooms or romantic igloos. You can also build your own classic igloo, warm up with cheese fondue or enjoy a cocktail at the Igloo Bar.
