This eHow guide will demonstrate how to apply the "Brabo" choke as a counter to a single leg takedown. If you find that you are getting taken down easily with the single leg in grappling tournaments, consider finishing with this great counter.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • No-Gi training partner who doesn't mind getting choked.
  • Mats or Training Surface.
  • Spider-like arms don't hurt either.

Step1
Your partner will shoot for a single leg takedown onto your right leg. Sprawl to your right hip. If they grab a high single and lift your leg up, move to the second step.
Step2
Whizzer by taking your right arm and reaching over their left arm. Hook over tightly, then grab the back of your partner's head with your left hand to push their head down. This is just a temporary step to avoid the takedown for enough time to lock in the choke.
Step3
Use your right arm to reach palm up under your opponent's throat. (This arm should now be around over their left triceps and your forearm should be under the armpit, the collar bone, and their throat.) Grab your partners neck with your right hand behind their right ear.
Step4
Use your left arm that was pushing the head down to lock the choke by dropping your left bicep towards your right hand. Grab your left bicep with your right hand.
Step5
Now, your right arm should be wrapped around your partners triceps and throat and grabbing your left bicep next to your partner's right ear. Bring your Left hand up to your partners back to tighten the lock around the throat. Your arms should both be in tight V shapes with your right hand grabbing your left bicep and your left hand on your opponent's back.
Step6
Fall back and to your right side while squeezing your biceps together, then walk your feet towards your partner to finish the choke. Try to mount them while the choke is locked tight so they won't be able to escape.
Step7
If walking does not give you enough pressure, try tightening the choke by lifting your left bicep higher.

Tips & Warnings

  • The brabo choke can be applied from many different positions and used as a counter to many passes, takedowns, and escapes, so adding these chokes to your arsenal will give you a great advantage in competition.
  • This choke can be applied quickly and may not give your opponent much time to submit. Please be cautious with a partner to avoid causing him or her to lose consciousness.
