How to Draw Up Insulin For an Injection

Finding out your pet has diabetes is stressful. Hearing that you will need to learn how to handle the insulin and give your pet the shot can be terrifying. For most owners of diabetic pets the process becomes routine quickly.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Insulin
  • Insulin needles
  1. Step 1

    Remove insulin from the refrigerator.

  2. Step 2

    Roll the vial of insulin in your hands to warm the fluid and mix the medicine.

  3. Step 3

    Take the cap off the insulin needle.

  4. Step 4

    Pull the plunger to the appropriate level as prescribed by your vet. You will be filling the syringe with air.

  5. Step 5

    Insert the needle into the vial.

  6. Step 6

    Press the needle plunger in, injecting the air into the vial.

  7. Step 7

    With the needle still in the vial, fill the syringe with insulin to the dose prescribed by your veterinarian.

  8. Step 8

    With the needle pointed up, tap the syringe a few times so that any air moves toward the needle.

  9. Step 9

    Gently remove the air by slowly pressing on the plunger.

  10. Step 10

    Remove needle from vial. Place cap back on needle for protection.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never shake the insulin bottle to mix.
