How to Dispose of a Dead Bird

There is nothing worse than finding a dead bird in your yard, however, death is a natural part of the living cycle. Birds die for a variety of reasons such as accidents, predators, or disease. Since the cause of death is not always obvious, it is best to be cautious when handling the disposal of a dead bird. Read on to learn more.

Things You’ll Need:

• 2 plastic bags

1. Place your hand in the first plastic bag.
2. Using your protected hand, pick up the bird.
3. Pull the bag off your hand and over the bird.
4. Knot the bag to prevent the dead bird from falling out.
5. Place the first bag into the second bag. Knot the second bag.
6. Place the bag with the dead bird into your outside garbage can for removal.
7. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and hot water, even if you know you didn’t come in contact with the dead bird.

Tips & Warnings

• You can use a shovel to pick the dead bird. Be sure to disinfect the shovel after use.
• Never touch a dead bird with your bare hands.
• Keep children and pets away from dead birds.
• If at all possible, never bring the dead bird into your home. If the bird died in your home, wash and disinfect any surface the bird may have come in contact with.
