So you're a smoker. And you don't plan on quitting anytime soon. But now you've crossed paths and become interested a person who is a non-smoker and you would like to date them. What should you do? Here's some tips to help you consider your options.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Open communication
  • Positive mind
  • Courage
  1. Step 1

Decide whether you could consider quitting smoking. Maybe it's worth it. Maybe it's time. Maybe this is divine intervention speaking quite loudly. Maybe it's not. Do you want to keep smoking? Answer truthfully because you only have to answer to one person: yourself.

  2. Step 2

If you decide you like to smoke, then own it. Don't be embarrassed. If you are embarrassed or afraid to date a non-smoker than you are hiding behind a fear and you're basically saying it's not OK to smoke. Who says so? Only you do. You're making that assumption. Yeah, sure: there's plenty of health reports about it. But there's also plenty of examples of people leading "normal" lives. Again, it's mindset.

  3. Step 3

Once you own it then quit being afraid. If you hide something, you are not being truthful. And you're lying to yourself, not anyone else. That's the only point that matters. Tell them! Be open! You could say something like, "I really like you so and so. I am very interested in dating you. But I must tell you I am a smoker and I realize you are not. Does that matter to you?" Well, if it really does matter to them, then they are not the "right person" for you anyhow.

  4. Step 4

Loving and relationships are best based in the "you." Not what you do or don't do. If a person is interested in you, they are interested for you. Period. Connections of the heart are what matters most. External social stigma's and fears are just someone hiding behind their own fears.

  5. Step 5

You could certainly offer to be considerate of their non-smoking status and decide not to smoke around them. This will only work though if they are willing to not judge you FOR smoking. Again, taking you for you--not what you do or don't do.
