Smoking is a choice that is made by someone. Unfortunately, secondhand smoke is a result of someone else smoking and sometimes there's no way around it. We just have to deal with it. So what do you do? Here's some tips that will hopefully help.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Patience
  • Positive frame of mind
  • Strong body, mind and spirit
  • Compassion
  1. Step 1

The easiest way to deal with secondhand smoke is to avoid it altogether. Avoid placing yourself in a position to be exposed to it. If you are in a bar, well then you are choosing to expos yourself to it.

  2. Step 2

If you are in a position or place where smoking is not the "norm" (for example, a bar), you do have the option to kindly and politely ask if the person smoking could stop. They may say "no" but you do have the right to ask. Asking is not a crime. But make sure you ask in the appropriate manner. If you are condescending when you ask, you're not going to have much success. Tone and attitude is key.

  3. Step 3

If you simply must be exposed to secondhand smoke and cannot avoid it or remove yourself from it, then the power of your mind must help you. It is said (and believed) that one cannot attract a cold unless one believes they can "get it." In other words, if you "think" you will attract a cold or sickness, you will. Don't underestimate the power of the mind.

  4. Step 4

Boost your immune system. Maintain a healthy body, mind and spirit. There is an enormous amount of "how-to's" when it comes to body, mind, spirit. Do some research. Yoga is one of the best ways to maintain all 3.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make no mistake, secondhand smoke is not very healthy to be exposed to. But it's your perception and your thoughts surrounding it that will determine whether or not you are affected by the smoke.
  • Energy flows where attention goes. Don't place your attention on the negatives. Tell yourself (and believe it) that you are healthy and happy under any circumstances.
  • Consider compassion for the individual smoking. They are surely struggling with their habit. Don't criticize. A little compassion goes a long way.
