Step 1
The Consumer Action Guide to Toxic Chemicals in Toys is a list published on the web of toys known to have toxic lead contents. Avoid anything on this list.

Step 2
Avoid products made in China. This is not to discriminate. Products made in the US, Canada or most of Europe are regulated much more strictly and are less likely to contain high led content.

Step 3
Make note when surfing the web, watching the news or listening to the radio, of any new recalls that might be happening so you are aware of what to avoid. If you have already purchased these products, be sure to send them in for the recall. Do not allow your children to keep them.

Step 4
Get involved. You can support any number of campaigns designed to revise standards and regulate safety inspections for toys entering the country. Many major corporations as well as politicians are already involved in this way.

on 4/12/2008 Another good tip is to get on the email list for the CPSC. That way when a recall occurs you know about it immediately. It's amazing the things that are recalled; I usually get about an email a day with new products that are unsafe. A great many are from China, but not all.

on 12/14/2007 Thanks for the information. Remember that when you buy USA you are supporting our country! I love buying from little local stores with hard to find any where else items. It may cost a little more but your putting food in their babies mouths and if you do have an issue they are quick to address it. Your not a number at these stores.
