Hang a Picture Using a Stud Finder

We all want the interior of our homes to look attractive, clean and pleasant. When it comes to picture hanging many people fail terribly. To properly hang a picture is actually a really simple task, but you will need the proper supplies. Easily hang your pictures and art anywhere in your home by following these steps!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • $30 budget
  • Pencil
  • Step-stool or chair
  • Picture hangers
  • Hammer
  • Stud finder
  • Personal time

How to Hang a Picture Using a Stud Finder

  1. Step 1

Purchase the supplies. A short visit to your local hardware store will give you all the supplies you will need for this endeavor.

  2. Step 2

Use the stud finder. Stud finders seem tricky but they really are simple to use. Lay the stud finder flat against the wall you wish to hang a picture on. Press the button on the side to activate it, and slowly slide the stud finder across the wall until the green light indicates there is a stud present.

  3. Step 3

Mark the stud with your pencil. Using your pencil simply make a small mark on the wall so you know where the stud is.

  4. Step 4

Choose the proper picture hangers. You will be able to find several different types of picture hangers at your local hardware store. They are all rated based upon the weight they are designed to hold. Make sure you choose the right picture hangers otherwise your art might come crashing to the ground.

  5. Step 5

Install the picture hanger. Using your hammer and gripping it by the bottom of the handle, lay the picture hanger flat against the wall, lining up where you marked the stud. Insert the nail and pound the hanger securely into the wall.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you wish to hang your art higher use a step stool to reach the area.
  • Try to hammer the nail in with solid strokes, gripping the hammer near the end of the handle so the weight of the head pounds into the nail.
  • Be careful when using the hammer, you don’t want to accidentally hit your thumb.
  • Be careful when using a step ladder, lest you fall and sustain injury.

on 2/26/2008 And here I've lived all my life ignoring the studs!! Now I find myself having to use them (tv/dvd mounts and heavier items). I hope your next how-to tells what to do when you need to use more than one stud to hang something. That is my next tackle-it-yourself project!

on 2/25/2008 Good reminder... I have been known to "guess" where the studs are on occasion.... not a good idea.
