Things You'll Need:
- Money for course fees
- Any required class materials
-
Step 1
The Indianapolis Art Center offers classes year-round. Spring classes start in January and continue through April. The summer and fall/winter schedules follow. About 8 weeks before classes begin, you can view the season schedule on the Indianapolis Art Center Web site. (The center will also mail you a paper catalog on request.)
-
Step 2
Before you sign up for a class, determine the time commitment you’re willing to make. You can take a seven-week or 15-week course that meets for about three hours per week, or you can sign up for a workshop that meets on just one weekend.
-
Step 3
Not sure which art form you’d like to try? Check the Art Center’s schedule of creative samplers, which allow you to explore a specific type of art for a few hours. The cost--about $30--covers all of your materials, and you’ll walk away knowing whether you’d like to make a more significant time commitment in that medium.
-
Step 4
Now you’re ready to peruse the schedule and pick your class. Courses are available for adults in ceramics, computers, drawing, painting, fiber (such as weaving and textile design), glass-blowing, jewelry, photography, printmaking, sculpture, woodworking and other miscellaneous topics. You can even take a class on film appreciation, home décor or calligraphy. Classes are split into beginner, intermediate and advanced levels, so be sure to sign up for the appropriate one.
-
Step 5
When you’ve selected your class, sign up online or fill out the registration form in your catalog. You can also register by phone or stop by the Art Center in person. Sometimes the course description will list required materials or tools, so make a note to yourself to pick up those items before the class begins.
-
Step 6
On the first day of class, dress appropriately and bring any required materials. Don’t be embarrassed about wearing grubby clothes. It’s how you should dress, especially for a messy medium like ceramics, and there will be other people there dressed just as poorly--including the instructor.
-
Step 7
Remember that the point is to have fun. The Art Center makes a point to welcome beginners, so it’s okay if you’ve never even picked up a paint brush. You’re here to learn, and so is everyone else.
-
Step 8
Thinking of signing up your child or teenager for a class? Age-appropriate youth classes are offered year-round, and the registration process is the same as for adult classes. The Art Center also offers a weekly summer camp program for kids, with separate tracks covering ceramics, computer animation and an arts sampler. (There’s a spring break art camp, too.)
