How to Repair a Headliner

This is a project that can be done; but it will require sometime to do. So be prepared in order to do this setting aside a little time is important to see this project through. Read on to learn more.

    How to repair a headliner

  1. Step 1

    Repairing the headliner of a car will require two people to actually put the headliner back in place. The first thing to do is to unscrew all of the lights and the holders for clothes. Anything that is screwed into the headliner must be taken out first. The headliner is a board with fabric on it, the fabric is attached by glue.

    If the headliner is hanging or there is a hole then it must be replaced. After pulling the headliner down you must detach the fabric and scrape the glue off of the board. In order to fix the headliner the fabric must be replaced. If the headliner has small damage you maybe able to just take the glue adhesive spray and glue the fabric back down.

    Take the headliner board and either take measurements from the board or take the board to a fabric store. Do not purchase a thick piece of fabric select something that is similar to what is already there. You can get creative and change the color of the headliner if you wish.

    Make sure you have more then enough fabric in the event a mistake is made. The adhesive spray can be purchased from a automotive store, look for a spray that says glue adhesive on it purchase 2-3 cans. To put the headliner together it will require two people. Spray the glue adhesive spray onto the headliner board and place the fabric in corners one at a time. Once all the corners are even and covered allow the headliner to sit and dry. After the headliner is completely dried then you can begin to put the headliner back into the car and attach all the lights and anything else that had to be unscrewed.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure that you try to do this in a temperature of about 70 degrees if possible.
  • If not sure of the fabric ask someone in the fabric store and explain what you are doing.
  • If this project is to much take it to a mechanic shop and they will have a list for people that replace the headliner.
  • The cost for a replacement of a headliner is about 200 dollars.
