Gmail is one of the few free email providers that lets you set up a POP account so that you can read and reply to messages offline, without being connected to the Internet. Read on to learn how you set up your POP3 Gmail account in Outlook Express.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Outlook Express
  • Gmail Account

Step1
Launch Outlook Express. Click on "Tools" and then "Accounts."
Step2
In the "Internet Accounts" box, click on "Add" and then "Mail."
Step3
Enter the display name for your account. Click "Next."
Step4
Enter the Email Address for your Gmail account. Click "Next."
Step5
Enter the following information:

Incoming Mail: pop.gmail.com
Outgoing Mail: smtp.gmail.com

Click "Next."
Step6
In Account Name, enter your full Gmail email address followed by the password for your account. Click "Next."

Click on "Finish."

Now, you need to specify the Gmail server settings. Highlight the new Email account you have just created and click on "Properties."

Click on the "Servers" tab. Under "Outgoing Mail Server," check the box that says "My Server Requires Authentication."
Step10
Click on the "Advanced" tab. Check both boxes that say "This Server Requires a Secure SSL Connection." Enter the following information:

Outgoing Mail: 465
Incoming Mail: 995
Step11
Click "OK" and "Exit." You should now be able to send and receive Gmail emails in Outlook Express.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some ISP's or Firewalls block ports 465 or 995. In this case, contact the relevant technical support personnel for further assistance.
  • If this is your first time downloading from Gmail, be prepared for a long wait.
