Experts say our sense of smell quickly connects us to memories, so make your holiday memorable, make it smell good. Here's a cheap and easy potpourri mix to make the house smell a lot like Christmas.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • 3 oranges
  • 3 quarts water
  • large stock pan
  • 2 teaspoons cloves
  • 3 sticks cinnamon

Step1
Place water in large pot and bring to a boil over medium heat. Slice or quarter oranges and add to pot. Mix in cloves and cinnamon. Once the mixture has reached a rolling boil, decrease heat to simmer. The soft fragrance will slowly fill the house. If the water gets low, add more. When oranges turn mushy, remove cinnamon sticks and pour down garbage disposal for a fresh scent there as well.
Step2
Another option for this warm scent in to use apple peelings and cores after chopping apples for a holiday treat. Mix cloves, cinnamon and apple pie spice with apples. This is a more subtle scent than the orange version. Add a splash of vanilla to make it smell like you have been baking all day.
Step3
As an added bonus, the boiling water helps moisturize the air in the house, amking it feel warmer and helping to ward off thsoe dry winter colds.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be sure to keep the pot far enough back that children and pets cannot accidentally knock it off the stove.

on 12/11/2007 We love it too. We just recently started adding a splash of vanilla to the mix and it makes me want to bake cookies, but it does make the house smell nice.
