Step 1
Introduce your child to many different sports. Buy them a ball, glove, bat, whatever tool they may need. For younger children just throwing, kicking and chasing a ball can be extremely useful.
-
Step 2
It is okay to sign them up for camps, but don't toss them in the fire until they are ready. Kids learn very little from leagues where they spend the majority of time running aimlessly or building sand castles in the outfield.
-
Step 3
Play with them, but don't push them. Take them outside and toss the ball, swing the bat or kick the ball. But remember this may only last fifteen minutes, a child's attention can very short.
-
Step 4
When they are ready sign them up for a league. Learning how to compete is very important and can be a life long tool. Again let them compete, but it is vital that your competitive drive be kept in check.
-
Step 5
The most important step is to let your child play the game with other children, minus adult supervision. Let them work out the rules and work through the disagreements. Ninety-nine percent of the time kids enjoy pick-up games more than the parent supervised leagues.
