Lavash bread is a traditional flatbread served in the Middle East and can be used to make a sandwich or wrap. It's a lightly baked bread that can be served with dips, as an appetizer or enjoyed as a healthy snack. Here's how to make (8 pieces of) lavash bread.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 package yeast
  • 2 cups warm water
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 5 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  1. Step 1

Prepare the bowl. Coat the inside of a metal mixing bowl with oil, and set aside.

  2. Step 2

Prepare the yeast. Mix the yeast, water, and sugar in a large mixing bowl.

  3. Step 3

Make the dough. Slowly add the flour 1/2 cup at a time to the yeast mixture. Add the salt and sesame seeds and knead for at 10 to 15 minutes by hand. Dough will become firm and have a stretchy consistency.

  4. Step 4

Let the dough rise. Shape the dough into a ball and place in oiled bowl. Cover with a dishcloth, and let rise in a warm area for 45 minutes until dough doubles in size.

  5. Step 5

Preheat oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit.

  6. Step 6

Prepare baking sheet. Lightly oil a 12x15 baking sheet and set aside.

  7. Step 7

Separate dough into eight equal-sized pieces. Roll each one out onto the baking sheet to resemble large strips.

  8. Step 8

Create holes in the dough. Lightly puncture the surface of the dough 1/2" apart.

  9. Step 9

Bake bread for 6 to 8 minutes until top is lightly brown.

  10. Step 10

Remove bread from oven and let cool on wire rack.

  11. Step 11

    Serve warm, and enjoy!

Tips & Warnings
  • The dough can be mixed in a bread machine to save on time.
  • Use an electric mixer at the slowest speed during the beginning stages instead of kneading by hand.
  • The dough cooks very quickly; do not bake for longer than 8 minutes or the bread will burn.
