How to Clean Tub Surrounds

Tub surrounds are exposed to the same elements as the tub itself and are prone to a buildup of soap scum and possibly even mold and mildew. The tub area is one place you want to be sanitary, so take a few minutes and clean that grime off with a simple household solution. Does this Spark an idea?

  • Automatic dishwasher detergent
  • Bucket
  • Sponge
  • Towel

Instructions

      Mix 3/4 cup of automatic dishwasher detergent with 1 gallon of water in a bucket.

      Sponge the soapy mixture onto the tub surround and let it sit for 15 minutes.

      Scrub all the surfaces of the surround with the sponge. Use some pressure and scrub in a circular motion to release all soap scum buildup.

      Rinse the cleaning solution off the surround with the sponge dampened in clean water.

      Dry the surround with a towel.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also use full-strength white vinegar from a spray bottle and follow the same instructions.

  • Make sure you only do this in a well-ventilated area! Some of the wax can be quite high on the fume content, and might even be toxic. Be sure to read all warnings on the wax container.

  • DO NOT use wax on the bottom of the tub where people will walk. This method leaves the surface EXTREMELY slippery!

  • DO NOT use on ceramic tile! The wax will cling to the grout and you'll never get it out. This only works on the plastic-type tub and shower surrounds.

  • Be sure to start with a small test area!
