Almost nothing sounds more awful than hearing a child use foul language. The thing that really hits home is that your child did not make up those words but heard them from someone else. While you can't stop the whole world from swearing, there are things you can do to help your child stop this nasty habit.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Patience
  • Commitment
Step1
The first thing you need to do is take a look at your home life and yourself. Do you use these offensive words around your child or even when you think your child is not listening? If so, you will need to set the example and stop using foul language yourself.
Step2
Explain to your child why foul language is not desirable. Most kids just pick up the language from their peers or adults, and they do not even realize what the words mean.
Step3
Teach your child other ways to express himself. Give him substitute words to use, such as "no way!," or "oh well."
Step4
Choose a phrase that you can you use each time your child swears. For instance you might say, "I don't appreciate that language." Be consistent, so your child gets the message that language is not acceptable at any time.
Step5
Take away something that your child enjoys doing every time you hear a bad word. Explain to your child that she will get her possession back when she goes a day or two without slipping. Kids are smart, and they know how to control their language. Don't let them fool you.
Step6
Make sure other family members are on-board to stop swearing themselves. It will be much easier to squelch the habit if the entire family sticks together.

Tips & Warnings

  • Time-outs generally do not work, especially with young children.
  • Kids sometimes use foul language when they want to get a reaction from you. Try giving your child some extra positive attention.
  • A rebellious child who refuses to stop the foul language may need counseling. Consult your family doctor or pediatrician in this case.
