Short hair is easy, breezy, fun and great for certain climates, like Arizona desert heat. As wonderful as a short haircut may be, however, it is not for everyone. If you want to fall in love with your short haircut rather than mourn the loss of your lengthy locks, take some time to think about it, practice and dig into your reasons why before you go under the scissors.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Valid reasons
  • Trusted stylist
  • Examples of different styles
  • Courage
  1. Step 1

Practice the look. Spend a few days with your hair pinned up, pulled back or otherwise simulating a short haircut. If you wish to go all out, get yourself a short hair wig and see how you adapt.

  2. Step 2

Browse styles. Maybe the spiky pixie is not for you and you’d rather have a finger-curled bob. Take into account how much time and hairspray is spent getting those finger curls. One of the biggest blessings of short hair is its breezy easiness. You’ll foul up that aspect by picking one that takes two hours to blow dry and style.

  3. Step 3

Analyze your reasons. Do you want short hair because you are sick of cleaning tendrils out of the shower drain or just because your favorite celebrity got her locks chopped off? Make sure short hair is something you want for the right reasons and it will feel right. Otherwise you’ll spend your days pulling on your bangs hoping they grow back faster.

  4. Step 4

Use a trusted stylist. If you have a regular hairdresser, definitely ask his opinion on your choice. If you don’t have a trusted stylist, ask for recommendations from someone with a cool haircut.

Tips & Warnings
  • Your ears and neck are now exposed. Sunscreen in the summer and a scarf and hat in the winter will become best friends for those vulnerable areas.
  • Cry if you must, but get over it. Going from long to short, even in stages, can sometimes be a shocker. You’ll get used to it.
  • You can always wear a hat.
  • I would say never get all your hair chopped off on a whim, but I sort of did, and I’ve been in love with short hair ever since.
  • Short hair looks great dyed. Because the hair is short, bold colors are not too overwhelming.
  • Remember it will always grow back.
  • Don’t go nuts once you’ve got all your hair chopped off only to find fashion magazines telling you long hair is in. They do that on purpose every time someone gets a short haircut.
