Things You'll Need:
- Time
- Budget consciousness
- Caulk
- Weather stripping
- Thermal drapes
-
Step 1
Maintain a temperate climate in your home by setting your thermostat at 68 F. Lower the temperature at night or when you are planning to be away for more than 4 hours.
-
Step 2
Lower the thermostat on your water heater to 120 F.
-
Step 3
Apply weather stripping and caulk to seal leaks around windows, doors, heating ducts, plumbing and anywhere cold air can enter.
-
Step 4
Do a full load of dishes. Use lower water temperatures. Air dry or towel dry dishes instead of using the dishwasher dryer.
-
Step 5
Do a full load of laundry using lower water temperatures and clean your dryer's lint trap after every use. Line-dry clothes rather than using your gas dryer.
-
Step 6
Clean or replace your furnace filters regularly. Keep your furnace clean, lubricated and properly adjusted.
-
Step 7
Open your drapes on sunny winter days to help warm up your home. Close the windows and close drapes on colder days. Use thermal window coverings for energy efficiency.
-
Step 8
Limit use of a gas stove or gas oven. Use microwave whenever possible in heating or cooking food.
-
Step 9
Do a quick shower daily instead of long, hot bubble baths.
-
Step 10
Limit using your gas fireplace.
