This "recipe" is a great activity for kids (under adult supervision, of course). These meaningful ornaments can last for years if properly handled.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Flour
  • Water
  • Cooking oil
  • Oven
  • Ornament hooks
  • Food coloring or poster paint (optional)
  1. Step 1

For each cup of flour, add a half cup of water. Combine flour and water into a large mixing bowl.

  2. Step 2

Mix flour and water with hands until mixture takes on a thick doughy consistency. Add more water or flour as needed.

  3. Step 3

Mold dough into tennis-ball sized mounds. Each mound will be one ornament.

  4. Step 4

If you would like to use food coloring, this is the time--squeeze food coloring into dough and roll through with fingers.

  5. Step 5

Shape dough into desired ornament figure--classic ball shape, heart, star, etc.

  6. Step 6

Use ornament hook to poke hole through top of ornament. Remove hook and set aside.

  7. Step 7

Brush each completed shape with cookie oil until coated.

  8. Step 8

Lay ornaments on greased baking sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 10 to 15 minutes or until solid and hard.

  9. Step 9

Remove from oven and allow to cool. If desired, decorate with poster paint or glitter. Allow to dry.

  10. Step 10

Insert ornament hook and hang from tree!

Tips & Warnings
  • While these may look like cookies, poster paint, glitter and other decorations are harmful. Warn kids that these are NOT treats to eat.
