At some point every man experiments with facial hair, whether on a long trip to Europe, during a midlife crisis or just when the mood strikes.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide what sort of beard you want: all the way around your mouth, just the tip of your chin, or a Vandyke (a trim, pointed beard).

  2. Step 2

Leave a mustache the next time you shave, and don't shave your chin. Stop shaving 1/2 inch from the sides of your mouth.

  3. Step 3

Continue shaving as the goatee grows out.

  4. Step 4

Check the goatee for uneven spots after two weeks. Shave it straight as needed.

  5. Step 5

Continue letting the goatee grow for two weeks.

  6. Step 6

Inspect its straightness again, and make any final alterations to the overall shape as desired.

Tips & Warnings
  • Goatees can look either very, very good or profoundly silly. Bald men frequently carry it off better than those with full heads of hair.

on 12/23/2008 I would've liked to know more being that I think men with goatees are the sexiest dudes on the planet. For example, what type of moisturizer do they use to avoid breakouts? Why wait two weeks to shave again? Does the texture of hair matter (ex. Black hair tends to grow in a longer amount of time versus say Asian hair because of texture)?

on 6/7/2007 Use good facial moisturizer too, one that Hydrates, so that your face won't dried up/irritates every time you shave/trim

on 7/18/2007 If you don't want to shave your head bald, which produces a much better face for a goatee, you can also grow very thick and long sideburns. These make any goatee look like it belongs. And the ladies will love to play with your sideburns, trust me. ;)

on 7/7/2006 I like using a straight edge shaper that resembles the leather-strap-sharpened blades of yesteryear barber shops. These now feature removable razors that are extremely sharp, so be careful. These are normally available at beauty supply stores.

Shapers enable you to have complete control over the blade, as opposed to guessing the gauge of the average horizontal razor. When using these, use a shaving lotion, as opposed to a foaming shaving cream, so that you can see very clearly which hairs go or stay.

Also, shape up the area on the bottom of the mustache, along the upper lip. This gives a real clean look.

on 3/27/2006 Use beard trimmers to trim your goatee or Van Dyke. Find a length setting on the trimmer head that you like and always trim it with that setting. Trim every time you shave. This minimizes straggly hairs, maintains a full, even length and effectively combs it too. Oh, and keep it short (unless you're a biker).
