Things You'll Need:
- Knife
- Flint
- Matches
- First Aid Kit
- Pouch
-
Step 1
ResearchRead about knife-based survival kits online and in printed publications. See Resources links, below. Start with the book, "Build the Perfect Survival Kit" by John D. McCann. Read information about survival kits on websites like Survival.com. Reading about them will help you decide what to include in your own knife-based survival kit.
-
Step 2
KA Bar KnifeChoose the central item for your knife-based survival kit: the knife. The knife can be large or small, expensive or not, depending on your needs and budget. According to one expert, the best knife for the survival kit is one that is medium in size and easy to tote around. A military-style knife, such as the Spec Plus Navy Knife, MK I, is inexpensive and well-suited for the job. The USMC Ka-Bar is another option.
-
Step 3
Add other essentials to your knife-based survival kits, such as a flint bar (learn how to use it) and matches in a baggie in a waterproof container. In an emergency preparedness situation, the ability to make fire is crucial.
-
Step 4
Include fishing line and fish hooks or small game snares in your knife-based survival kit. The ability to procure food through your survival kit is key. You can use your knife to process the animals once caught.
-
Step 5
First AidAdd a small first aid kit to your knife-based survival kit. Include bandages, gauze, tweezers and antiseptic wipes.
-
Step 6
Find a small flashlight to include in your knife-based survival kit. One that can be wound for power instead of needing batteries is ideal.
-
Step 7
Survival KitChoose a knapsack, waist pouch or other carrying case for your knife-based survival kit. It is important to choose a container that is portable, lightweight and not too bulky. You need to carry this with you at all times when in the wilderness, so make it as easy as possible.

on 9/6/2009 Uh, you forgot one major component to any good survival kit, the U.S. G.I. Canteen/Cup/Stove combo, it'll fit right inside that pack, give you a way to transport water, as well as to boil water you find and cook food in, and it all fits together into a neat little package, and the whole deal can be bought for about $15
