Tooth-whitening procedures are popular and several methods are now available that can remove brown and yellow discoloration from your teeth. Each one has pros and cons, depending on your specific needs, and should be discussed with your dentist.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Perform tray bleaching. A custom tray is filled with bleaching gel and fitted over the teeth. This is the least expensive tooth-whitening procedure and may be done at home. The gradual whitening makes it less likely to be noticed but will require two to four office visits.

  2. Step 2

Undergo Britesmile teeth-whitening. A bleaching gel is applied to the teeth and a special light activates the gel to begin the whitening process. This procedure can be done in one two-hour office visit and is moderately expensive. It is likely to be noticed because the color change is immediate.

  3. Step 3

Receive laser bleaching. This is similar to the Britesmile process but uses a laser instead of light with a frequency range. This may also be done in one office visit but is faster and more expensive than the Britesmile procedure.

  4. Step 4

Have dental veneers applied. Porcelain veneers can be adjusted to the shade of your choice and last for 5 to 10 years. Veneers resist staining well, but this procedure is irreversible and is quite expensive.

  5. Step 5

Get a full crown. This is the longest-lasting and most expensive procedure to whiten teeth. However, the whitening is a secondary effect because this procedure is normally reserved for teeth that are severely affected by cavities.
