There are many reasons why teeth become discolored and lose their white appearance. Some foods, coffee, smoking and even repeated use of certain medications can all stain teeth. Many people are turning to whitening procedures or products to help them regain their bright smiles. One popular home-based kit is a bleaching tray. You can make your teeth several shades whiter with the proper use of a bleaching tray.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Consult with your dentist prior to using a home bleaching tray to determine the best product to use and what results you might expect. Your dentist will also be knowledgeable about any possible side effects of using a bleaching tray.

  2. Step 2

Purchase a home teeth whitening kit. These can be found at most retail outlets, drug stores or even online dental product sites.

  3. Step 3

Brush and floss as part of your regular daily hygiene prior to using a home bleaching tray.

  4. Step 4

Boil some water and dip the tray into the water for about 5 seconds. Then bite down on the tray to form it to your teeth.

  5. Step 5

Pour whitening gel into the trays and place over your teeth. Keep trays in for about 30 minutes or for the time suggested by the manufacturer instructions. Some can even be kept in overnight.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure the tray fits comfortably before applying gel and wearing for an extended period of time. Ill-fitting trays can cause irritation to the gums.
  • Teeth may become sensitive during the bleaching process. This should be temporary. Consult your dentist if sensitivity becomes uncomfortable.
  • Avoid the gel coming into prolonged contact with your gums. This can cause irritation.
