Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums. It starts as a build up of plaque, and if not kept in check, plaque can progress to gingivitis. If gingivitis isn't treated in its early stages it can become periodontal disease. Brushing your teeth, flossing and visiting the dentist can prevent gingivitis. You can also minimize the occurrence of gingivitis through proper nutrition.

      Eat plenty of fiber. Diets rich in high-fiber such as vegetables, beans, whole grains and fruit help to build your immune system. A healthy immune system is in a better position to fight the gingivitis causing bacteria than a body with a compromised immune system.

      Choose crunchy natural foods. Foods that crunch help to clean your teeth. Soft foods on the other hand tend to get caught in between your teeth thus promoting bacteria growth. If you do eat soft foods that stick between your teeth, it's best to brush your teeth afterwards.

      Take your vitamins. In addition to proper nutrition, taking supplements help to fight gingivitis. Vitamins and minerals are known to help fight the bacterial growth. Eat a diet rich in vitamin C, B, zinc, iron, magnesium, selenium, calcium and potassium. Many of the whole grain foods, fruits and vegetables are packed with these vitamins and minerals.

      Avoid sugars. Bacteria love sugar. The more sugar left hanging around your mouth and in between your teeth, the more fertile ground it is for gingivitis. A diet rich in sweets, white flour and fruit juices is a recipe for gingivitis growth.
