A dental veneer is a thin layer of material placed over the surface of a tooth. It may be used to improve the appearance of the tooth or protect a damaged tooth. A composite dental veneer may be directly placed or indirectly fabricated while a porcelain veneer must be indirectly fabricated.

Instructions

    • 1

Make at least three trips to your dentist. The first visit will be for a consultation, the veneers will be made on the second visit and then applied on the third visit.

    • 2

Tell your dentist what result you are trying to achieve. Your dentist will examine your teeth and may need to take some X-rays or some impressions to see if your expectations are realistic.

    • 3

Decide what type of veneers you prefer. Composite resin veneers are thinner and therefore require removal of less tooth surface while porcelain veneers look more like natural teeth and resist stains better.

    • 4

Have the veneers made. You may need a local anesthetic before the dentist removes a 0.5 mm layer from the surface of the teeth on which the veneers will be applied. An impression will be taken of the teeth from which a dental laboratory will make the veneers.

    • 5

Get the veneers bonded to your teeth. Your dentist will trim the veneers as needed to achieve the proper fit, and the color also may be adjusted by selecting the shade of cement to use. The teeth will be etched and cement applied to the veneer. After the veneer is fitted into place, a specific frequency of light will cause the cement to cure very quickly.
