Step 1
Decide what type of trash compactor you will be shopping for. Study your situation and choose between the free standing unit or the under the counter trash compactor units.
-
Step 2
Consider the free standing trash compactor that stands freely by itself. It can be placed anywhere you need it to be, as long as there is access to an electrical outlet. It also provides a small amount of additional counter space as the top surface is finished like some counter tops.
-
Step 3
Select the "under the counter" style trash compactor. It fits under the counter to appear built in. You may want to plan to buy a trash compactor prior to finishing your kitchen. If you are adding an under the counter trash compactor to update your kitchen, you will need to determine where you will have it installed. Take into consideration that the location must have access to an electrical outlet under the cabinet.
-
Step 4
Place a trash compactor in your garage if you don't have room in your kitchen. There are some trash compactors that are specifically designed for garages. They are slightly larger in size and have a more industrial look. Most have a galvanized front and heavy gauge casters for easily rolling to wherever it is needed in your garage.
-
Step 5
Measure the area that you plan to place your trash compactor prior to purchasing one. Take the dimensions of the space or area you plan to place the trash compactor with you as you shop. Make sure that you take into consideration the space that will be needed to pull the drawer of the compactor out to load and unload. Also, for under the counter models, make space allowances for the trim out kits that will come with the unit.
-
Step 6
Check out all the features offered on the trash compactors you are considering. Most models have on and off switches and even locks, which can be very helpful features if you have small children. Watch a floor display run to see what the noise level is for that model unit. See if the various units come with a dispenser for a deodorizer. Ask for information about the warranty and service policies on the trash compactors you are considering.
-
Step 7
Shop for a trash compactor at home improvement centers, appliance stores and major retailers that carry appliances. Often, you can order through your home builder. Pricing on the trash compactor units will vary depending upon the brands and various features of each unit. The more affordable models will be Kenmore and Whirlpool. The more expensive units will be the Broans and Vikings.
