Laundry can pile up unbelievably fast. That's why most of us use a laundry hamper. The type of laundry hamper you buy depends upon where it will be placed and how you get your laundry done. Use the following suggestions to help you decide what type of laundry hamper would be best for you to buy.

From Quick Guide: Laundry Hints and Help
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine where your laundry hamper will be located. If it is visible as people come and go from the room, you might want to have a more decorative one. If you have space in a closet or under a counter, maybe a less expensive basket type laundry hamper will do.

  2. Step 2

Pick a practical and sturdy laundry hamper for a busy family with children and pets. More than likely, this hamper should be more of a laundry-basket type that can be carried around easily when it is time for the laundry to be done.

  3. Step 3

Choose a laundry hamper with a stylish look for a master bedroom or bath. There are many of these to select from. Most all of these have lids that close and some even have lids that can double as a vanity seat.

  4. Step 4

Select a laundry hamper for small spaces, such as a dorm room, that will collapse to store when not being used. This also helps when it's time to move in and out of the dorm room. Some of these are made of a mesh type material and might have some spring wiring in them to hold them open and then collapse down to store. Another option for a dorm room laundry hamper is to have one that hangs on the back of a door on a hook. Your student just slings it over their shoulder and heads home to mom to have her do her laundry.

  5. Step 5

Consider a laundry hamper for a senior citizen that may have rollers on it similar to a laundry basket. Often, senior citizens live in assisted living situations and have to take their laundry down a hallway to a laundry room. They can collect their laundry in the hamper and then roll it all down the hall to the laundry room.

  6. Step 6

Look at buying laundry hampers that appeal to your style. Many laundry hampers are made of wicker. These should be lined in a canvas or linen type materials, so that the wicker does not snag on your clothing when inside the hamper. Even more popular are the "wicker look" laundry hampers. These look like wicker, but are actually a much smoother material, sometimes a plastic, so that your clothing will not be snagged. There are also faux metals and stainless steel laundry hampers.
