1. Select your material. Bath mats come in a variety of different materials such as bamboo, cotton and terrycloth.

2. Evaluate your bathroom's color scheme to decide what color to get. You can match the color, or choose a complement. Coordinating your bath mat with your color scheme shows style and artistic flair.

3. Calculate the size you need. If you have a small bathroom that only has a shower stall, you wouldn't need to buy a large bath mat. On the other hand, if you have a large bathroom with plenty of space there's no need to scrimp on bath mat size.

4. Remember your housemates. If you have young children, you may not want to buy light-colored bath mats because they're bound to get dirty. On the other hand, if you're the only one that will be using the bath mat, your options are open.
