How to Buy Extension Cords

Not all extension cords are built the same. Overloading or using the wrong extension cord for a particular job can be a deadly mistake. An overloaded extension cord can overheat and eventually cause a fire, so it's important to use the right extension cord for your electrical needs.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Know the amount of current the extension cord can handle before you buy it. If you're planning to plug more than one appliance into the extension cord, you have to total the wattage of both appliances and make sure the extension cord can handle the electrical load.

  2. Step 2

Ensure the extension cords you buy are UL approved. The UL approval stamp ensures that the extension cord has been rigorously tested and is safe for use.

  3. Step 3

Decide if the cord is for indoor or outdoor use. Outdoor extension cords are thicker and are made of a more durable material than indoor extension cords. Indoor extension cords aren't build for the rougher treatment they'll get outdoors.

  4. Step 4

Determine the length you'll need. Generally, the longer a cord gets, the lower its capacity to carry electricity. Therefore, if you want to plug in a large powerful appliance that requires a lot of electricity, you should buy a shorter extension cord.

Tips & Warnings
  • Overloading an extension cord is a recipe for fire. If you notice that the extension cord is getting warm, unplug the extension cord immediately. You may need a heavier gauge extension cord to handle the appliances you have plugged into it.
