How to Lose Weight With Diuretics
A diuretic is any substance that increases the production of urine. There are four general categories: high ceiling, osmotic, potassium-sparing and thiazides. Each of these groups increase urination, but does so in a different way. A diuretic is most often used medically to treat edema, heart failure, hypertension and some kidney disease, but it also is taken as a weight-loss aid. Here's how to lose weight with diuretics.

1
Observe a temporary weight loss from diuretics, especially when there is a significant amount of fluid retention. Diuretics are taken most often when a large amount of weight needs to be lost in a short amount of time.
-
2
Expect diuretics to be ineffective for long-term weight control. Because the weight loss is caused by retained fluid and not fat, it will be regained as soon as you drink additional fluid.

3
Take foods with natural diuretic properties. Foods have a more gentle diuretic effect than medication but can still be effective in treating a small amount of fluid retention. Apple cider vinegar, cranberries and any beverage containing caffeine are natural diuretics. Apple cider vinegar is high in potassium so it can help replace the potassium lost through frequent urination.
-
4
Consider the risks of abusing diuretics. Their prolonged use can lead to dehydration and a potassium deficiency, which can be dangerous.
-
5
Look at the other side effects of diuretics. The most common ones are dizziness, weakness and impotence in some cases.
