There isn't a single day of the year that Mom isn't special, so this Mother's Day, give Mom a gift of flowers that will last the whole year. Making silk flowers is simple and fun for all ages, and can be custom designed to your Mom's favorite colors or to match her home decor.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • 1 real rose
  • Cardboard
  • Pen or pencil
  • Scissors
  • Thin double-stick iron-on interfacing
  • Silk (green for petals plus any other colors you would like)
  • Green floral wire
  • Green florist's tape

Step1
Carefully pluck the petals from a real rose. There should be between 16 and 20 petals in all, plus leaves. Place the petals on a piece of thin cardboard and trace around them. Draw a small stub at the bottom of each cardboard petal, which you will use to attach your silk flowers to the stem.
Step2
Place a sheet of interfacing between two pieces of silk and iron the pieces together. The interfacing will keep your silk stiff like real petals and will ensure that the silk flowers do not shed.
Step3
Use your cardboard petals as templates to cut out your silk petals and leaves. Remember to leave the small stub at the bottom for easy attachment. You should have a number of petals in various sizes.
Step4
Secure the petals to the florists wire one by one using a piece of green florist's tape. Start with the smallest petal and finish with a green petal or two. Once the silk flower is complete, continue wrapping the green florists tape down the length of the stem, adding a few more petals.
Step5
Make as many silk flowers as your would like for your Mother's Day bouquet and gather them together in a nice vase. You can add a bit of shimmer to your bouquet by spraying the flowers with paraffin and adding a touch of glitter. If you like, you can even add a small drop of flower essential oil to the bouquet for a beautiful aroma.

Tips & Warnings

  • The amount of material and interfacing will depend on how many silk flowers you would like to make for your Mother's day flower bouquet.
  • You can make any type of silk flower for your Mother's Day bouquet using a real flower as your template.
  • Add the finishing touches to your flower bouquet by placing a few colored glass stones at the bottom of the vase, tying the vase with a pretty bow or adding a splash of baby's breath to your final arrangement.
