Going on a vacation overseas is certainly exciting. However, laying a solid groundwork for specific costs of a family vacation that involves travel overseas is key in making sure you have a good time in a foreign country. Here are some things you can do to get you off on the right foot for budgeting your overseas family vacation.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Draw up a list of expenses you will have for anything you purchase before your vacation and for any home expenses you will accrue while you are out of town. Include items like a passport, extra medication, film, sunblock, etc. This will keep you from having to use up any of the money you are going to use while on vacation.

  2. Step 2

Make a list for all expenses for travel, accommodations, and any expenditures while on your vacation. This will become the master list for the amount of money you'll need while overseas.

  3. Step 3

Do your research. Write down specific costs on both lists by using the Internet and your travel agent as resources. Be aware that the cost of going overseas on a family vacation will ultimately cost more than staying within your own country so don't worry that the numbers seem large. They will be, but by knowing the exact number you will save yourself from going into debt. Also, be familiar with the current exchange rates long before you get on the plane.

  4. Step 4

Plan wisely. Long before your vacation have a clear idea of how much money you will need by the date you leave, and be sure not to pull too much out of your monthly budget when the date comes close. This will keep you from having to use credit cards for the everyday items you will need before you leave.

  5. Step 5

Use credit cards wisely. While using credit cards for your vacation may be useful while you're overseas, don't make it your primary method of payment. Having cash to exchange into the appropriate currency for the country or countries you are visiting is not only necessary, but safer as well. The wisest plan is to have multiple forms of paying for your vacation including check cards, cash and traveler's checks.
